Butte County's new resource conservation district will have something of a debut party Tuesday to introduce local residents to what the district can do for them.

The new county department was created through a ballot measure last March and recently hired Hue Dang as the district conservationist. Dang previously worked at a similar post in Glenn County.

A resource conservation district provides technical service and experience at getting funding for various projects.

Before the election creating the district, Butte County was one of only a few counties in the state without one. This meant Butte was not eligible for certain aid under the national parent organization.

Ed Chombeaux, president of the new district's board of directors, said Tuesday's meeting, at the Veteran's Hall on 9319 the Midway in Durham, will be held from 9 a.m. to noon. Residents can get an idea of what the district can and voice opinions on where they would like to see happen.

"We'll have packets for them to look at the things the district has to offer."

Among the services will be administering services from the conservation programs in the most recently passed national farm bill, Chombeaux. These are voluntary programs landowners would opt for, he explained.

The county Department of Water will provide secretarial services for the new district, he explained.

"The RCD needs a strategic plan," Chombeaux said. "I hope we get some ideas at this meeting."

It's a big month for conservation ideas, he said. March 27 will be a watershed workshop showcase introducing the public to the ongoing work of watershed groups.

At the Tuesday meeting for the Resource Conservation District, representatives will be on hand from similar agencies in Colusa, Tehama and Glenn counties. Local growers can learn about the conservation programs in the farm bill. Highlights of the local natural resource concerns will also be given.
