WILLOWS - A Global Positioning System-based network will be set up in Glenn County to measure whether groundwater pumping is causing land to sink. This $94,000 project will be funded by a $74,000 grant from the state Department of Water Resources and county funds. One of the concerns of the extraction of groundwater is the possibility of land subsidence, which limits the ability to re-charge groundwater basins. This system will accurately measure any land subsidence occurring. The Glenn County Board of Supervisors recently approved a resolution presented by Lester Messina, water specialist with the Agricultural Commissioner's Office to execute a contract with DWR to proceed with the project.
